No shopping trip would be complete without a visit to one of Bangkok’s markets. And this one tops them all. Sprawling over 35 acres, Chatuchak on a typical weekend attracts about 200,000 visitors who teem through the kaleidoscopic warren of 15,000 shops and stalls that sell everything from clothes, handicrafts, art, antiques, home décor, to used books, plants, Buddhist amulets and exotic animals. You want something, they’ve got it here.

Plan on making it whole day outing, and beat the heat and crowds by arriving early. Doors open from 9am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 6pm-midnight on Fridays. The plant sections also open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7am-6pm. Divided into thematically sections, makes it easy to browse for what you really are after but it’s easy to get lost here. Make the clock tower, right in the centre, a meeting point. Or get your hands on a copy of Nancy Chandler’s quirky, colourful Map of Bangkok, available at most bookshops. Remember bargaining is expected here.

The market is also a great place to sample the culinary offerings from all the regions of Thailand. Coffee and fresh juice is available literally every step of the way, but ‘Add’ at Louk Som (Soi 38/2, Section 2) has been squeezing oranges for over 25 years and today uses over 6,000 of them a day to make the perfect thirst quencher. For Bt50 one-meal curry combos, head over to Phrik Yuan (Soi 38/3, Section 2). Foon Talob (Soi 1, Section 26) will satisfy any cravings you have for Northeastern Isaan food fare. With over 20 varieties of the fiery papaya salad, Dinpao is crowded, but don’t leave without trying their classic somtam Thai and fried chicken. Viva (Section 26) offers comfy seating coffees, juices, smoothies, and top-notch mojitos. In the evening a band provides a lively soundtrack.

Protip: If possible leave the kids out of this adventure
