Guided Walking Tours of Old Dhaka in Dhaka Bangladesh

Old Dhaka is the original part of the city that hugs the Buriganga River. Besides being a photographer’s dream it is a full-bore overload on the senses!

Royal Bengal Tours offers professional, customised walking tours of the area led by the company’s founder, Jewel, who is gifted with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and excellent English skills.

Itineraries could include:

  • Curzon Hall. A magnificent British- and Mughal-inspired brick building from 1904. Today, Dhaka University’s Faculty of Science calls it home. Curzon Hall is memorialised in ink on the back of older 1000-taka bank notes.
  • Bangshal Road. Aka Bicycle Street. Dozens of shops sell everything bike related, pedal-powered and other. The winding lanes that splinter off from here are home to bespoke shoemakers.
  • Tanti Bazaar. A labyrinthine warren of swarming, narrow streets and centuries-old crumbling brick buildings. If you’re looking for custom-crafted precious metal jewellery, come here.
  • Shankhari Bazaar. Named for the conch shells used to make shankha, ornamental bracelets worn by married Hindu women. Incense, handmade guitars, Hindu shrine builders and a tooth-numbing array of rainbow-coloured sweets await you.
