The Shack Beach Cafe

The Shack Beach Cafe
The Shack Beach Cafe in Galle

Located behind a row of shops, along the main road connecting Galle and Matara, is Dewata beach – a beautiful and unlikely surfing hotspot among locals and expats. And on this little stretch of paradise is The Shack, a little hangout with a big difference.

Once you spot The Shack’s bright yellow sign nestled inconspicuously among the shops, just walk in, make your way through the hip little cafe and step out the back onto a stretch of sandy beach. Take a seat on a remodelled oil drum stencilled with a cheeky slogan ‘#Dirty Little Beach’, and order yourself a Soul Reviver – a cooling concoction of pineapple, ginger, coriander, black pepper, turmeric and coconut water. Then just sit back, soak in the mellow house tunes and let heavenly bliss unfold.

What sets that The Shack apart is its constant involvement with the local community, be it organising initiatives to keep the surrounding beach clean or providing local artists a place to express themselves.

When it comes to food and drink, The Shack’s menu caters to vegans and non-vegetarians, featuring a variety of Asian fusion, breakfast, brunch, burgers and sandwiches, as well as exotic and refreshing smoothies. The cafe is open everyday, in case you want to grab a bite, take a dip, or just dig your toes in the sand.
