Sri Lanka’s legendarily beautiful southern coastline boasts of warm sandy beaches lined with lush coconut palms, regularly interrupted by quiet coves and shady mangroves. Then there is the ocean itself, miles of varying shades of blue and home to some of the most exotic marine life on the planet. The best way to do discover all of this is by boat.

A great place to embark on a boat ride is Unawatuna, a little coastal stretch not too far from Galle. For a small fee, you can hire one of the many fishing boats that dot the beach. You can also get in touch with an experienced local tour operator who will facilitate your adventure while ensuring total safety.

From Unawatuna, head to Jungle Beach, an almost deserted beach just 3 kilometres away and the closest you can get to the South Pacific. With easy access to the water and a bay that is sheltered from the stronger currents, Jungle Beach is a snorkeler’s paradise.

You can venture further off the coast by taking a glass-bottom boat ride out into the Indian Ocean. Take a peek into an enchanting underwater world and watch as shoals of exotic fish and the occasional family of sea turtles pass you by. It is truly an experience you will never forget.
