Hiap Joo Bakery

Probably the oldest bakery in Johor, Hiap Joo Bakery has been around since 1919 and is running in the third generation now. History states that this bakery was originally started by an Englishman who later passed it on to the Lim family in the 1930’s where it is still being operated by the grandson. The bakery was closed for three years during the Second World War and resumed business again in the late forties, where they supplied French bread to local coffee shops as well as prisoners in jails.

Nowadays, when you visit the Hiap Joo Bakery, you will be surprised to find a massive long queue from as early as 9.00 am, mostly tourist seeking the much talked about coconut bun and banana cake, especially on weekends. There is no easy way around this as you would have to get in line to sample this century old taste. The bakery still practices the original baking methods of using wood fire in their 100-year old oven which takes up half the shop space.

When you are standing in line and it is your turn, the bakery owners will invite you into the shop to place your order and this is when you will see the interior of this classic bakery. The thrill of this is to line up with everyone, but the outcome of the buns is well worth the wait it as the original taste is something that cannot be found these days and it is extremely delicious.

They are closed on Sundays, and to buy the coconut buns, you need to be in the line by 11.00am to avoid the weekend queue as they run out of almost everything by 1.00 pm.
