Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

The Johor State Mosque is probably one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia due to the stunning 19th century English Victorian architecture that is infused with Moorish and Malay influence. Completed at the turn of the century in 1900 after eight years of construction, the beautiful mosque sits on top of a hill overlooking the Tebrau Straits and Singapore.

A prominent feature here is the four grand minarets that resemble British watch towers due to the Victorian architecture while the much of the materials used to build the mosque was imported from Turkey, Czechoslovakia and Italy. The facade of the structure shows tall Victorian wooden windows measuring six feet in height with beautiful English carvings, while each entrance holds majestic archways.

Inside the grand prayer room of the mosque, Roman pillars are prominent in the main prayer hall which can accommodate 2,000 worshipers. Landscaping around the mosque is well manicured and the best place to take a photograph is from the south entrance facing the sea and you can capture the grandeur of the building with its minarets.

Sultan Abu Bakar was also well known as the Father of Modern Johor as historians accredited Johor's development in the 19th century to Abu Bakar's leadership and currently, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is listed as a protected heritage monument by the Department of Museums and Antiquities of Malaysia. Non-Muslims are allowed in, but a dress code must be observed. To get there, you need to take a taxi from the city center and make sure the taxi waits for you before you head back.
