Koh Samui Rum in Koh Samui

The only motivation to make the trip to this part of the island is the rum: super smooth with evocative aromas of lime, orange, pineapple, and coconut, though au naturel is also an option. Take a group of friends and go sample some.

Arriving on the island in 2003, Elisa and Michel Gabrel decided to brew alcohol from the abundance of fruit available to pass their days. Unsuccessful in their initial efforts the idea distilled in to making rhum agricole. Thai sugarcane, which is naturally sweet on account of the humidity, is perfectly suited to this style of rum that is made in the French West Indies islands (Elisa is from Martinique) from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice; most of the rum we drink is made from molasses and is known as rhum industriel. Today they process over 10 tonnes of sugarcane in a season to distill around 5,000 litres of rum, using an alembic still imported from Armangnac.

Visitors get to meet Elisa, watch a short video of the production process, and sample the finished product in the open-air ‘tasting room’. The lucky ones that come between January and June get to see them processing the sugar cane. Their rum is best savoured on its own or with Elisa’s secret homemade Ti’ Punch syrup made from brown cane sugar. Buy some as it makes a great gift if you can resist the temptation to finish it yourself.
