Joe Downstairs in Phuket

Perched on a rocky headland with a stunning view of Kalim Bay and the sonorous sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below, its location is only one of the reasons that make this place a must go. All dressed in white, its comfortable outdoor deck offers front row seats for the island’s magnificent sunsets making it the perfect spot for a sundowner before your meal. But the main reason is award-winning Chef Aaron Hooper’s menu complemented by a wine cellar that regularly features in Wine Spectator magazine’s awards.

New World cuisine is the name of the game with a delightful choice of Asian and Western style tapas such as “Szechwan Long Beans with Toasted Almonds”, “Joe’s Spicy Chicken Wings with Lime/Mango Dipping Sauce”, “Pan-Fried Canoga Hills Goats Cheese with Red Pepper Jam” and the “Mini Braised Wagyu Beef Tacos with Crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese and Fresh Arugula”. The selection of mains offers some delights too with the immensely gratifying “Duck-2 Ways”, pan-seared duck breast on a bed of sautéed Napa cabbage and tender duck leg confit with potato puree and black currant reduction, a definite standout. For a lighter option, the starter of tender rock lobster tail sautéed with a light saffron/plum tomato sauce makes a good choice. Also plan a visit to sister restaurants, Baan Rim Pa and da Maurizio, located next door. All three are best suited for families, groups, or couples.
