Beer Fish

Beer Fish

Beer Fish is by far the most famous local dish in Yangshuo. If served in the original way, it should feature river carp caught nearby in the Li River. The fish is braised in a sauce that includes a bottle of the local Liquan beer as well as soy sauce and other spices. Simmering in this sauce, the fish is served covered with fresh cilantro, onions and bell peppers. The fish flavour is very mild and supports the fragrant “beer” sauce and fresh vegetables very nicely.

There are restaurants all along the Pedestrian Walk on West Street serving Beer Fish “啤酒鱼” (just look for these Chinese characters on the signs). Locals say that catfish or other less expensive fish are substituted for the now depleted Li River carp, so if you’re concerned, you may want to ask what kind of fish the restaurant is serving.

A nice option for Beer Fish is Cloud 9, a restaurant located on the third floor of a building just off the Pedestrian Walk.

Look out for hanging red lanterns as you walk down West Street Pedestrian Walk and you will reach the corner of Chengzhong Road. Cloud 9 is on the third floor of a building near the corner. Keep heading upstairs until you enter the friendly confines of Cloud 9 restaurant.

Choose a seat inside at one of the traditional round tables or head outside to the balcony if the weather permits – it commands a great view of the Pedestrian Walk, a view that gets more and more active as the night wears on.

Cloud 9 specialises in local Yangshuo cuisine and has a couple of different options for Beer Fish [link back to Beer Fish page]. You can choose fish with fewer bones, or go with the traditional choice that has plenty of bones but is delicious. Add a few Yangshuo vegetable dishes like tasty eggplant with fried green beans to accompany your meal. Or for the brave, order Cloud 9’s other specialty, Sichuan food. Sichuan cuisine is known for its use of various spicy chillies and peppers so you may want to ask the server for “a less spicy” option.

If you see some diners at other tables sporting mini-chef hats while they eat, this is because they’ve just cooked their own dinner. Cloud 9 also has a very popular cooking school so if that’s of interest, book a class and learn how to cook Yangshuo’s local specialties.
