Guilin Rice Noodles

Guilin Rice Noodles

Called “Guilin mi fen” in Mandarin, this delicious local specialty is humble and can just as easily be eaten as street food as in a sit-down restaurant. Despite its simplicity, this local delicacy makes a great breakfast or light meal.

The dish consists of boiled rice noodles, peanuts and perhaps some shaved slivers of beef or pork. When the bowl is ready, diners choose from multiple condiments to add to the noodles such as spicy chilli pepper sauce, pickles, cilantro and spring onions. Broth can also be added to make a dish with a soup-noodle consistency.

Guilin rice noodles are guaranteed to satisfy.

Lao Yu Tiao noodle shop on Yangshuo’s Bingjiang Road is a good place to try Guilin noodles. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the Dragon Head dock where passengers from Guilin disembark in Yangshuo.

You can find Guilin rice noodles almost anywhere but here are a few recommended spots:

Lao You Tiao | 老油条 – Bingjiang Road (滨江路) This small eatery is located near the Dragon’s Head Dock (龙头山码头) where boats ferrying passengers from Guilin to Yangshuo dock. This shop also specializes in warm soy milk and fried dough (you tiao) breakfasts.

No-name noodles shops on Guihua Road – There are a few shops just steps from Amari Yangshuo on Guihua Road (桂花路) between Diecui (叠翠) and Chengzhong (城中) Roads. They have tables on the sidewalk at all hours, so just step in and point at what you’d like to order from a photo-bearing menu.

Xing Ping Town (兴坪古镇) – Just as you leave the main part of the old quarter, there are a number of nice Guilin noodle shops near the bus parking lot. At the corner of New Street (新街) and Xinrong Street (新榕), look for the yellow sign with red characters and piles of dried noodles out front for a great place to try this local dish.
